Detail Review

Asus Zenfone 5Z

Asus Zenfone 5z

Its having the flagship processor that is the Snapdragon 845 chipset, which the oneplus 6 also has. But the base variant that comes with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 64gb of internal storage is priced at 30,000 rupees. But if you buy it with the ICICI credit card or a debit card you are gonna get it for 27,000 Rupees flat. So at that price point it’s a very compelling device. We would say, you’re getting flagship performance with this device. So again in terms of price to performance, it’s doing a very good job and another thing that we liked with this device is that the sim slot is a dual sim slot but it’s a hybrid solution so you can actually put a micro SD card on this one.

Further if we talk about the base variant for 27,000 rupees that comes with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 64gb of storage and it also supports a micro SD card slot. You can put a microSD card slot and you can get away with 64 gigabytes of storage. So that’s a good thing, generally, we don’t find a micro SD card slot in many of the other devices in this range. For example the honor 10 and even the OnePlus 6 simply do not provide any micro SD card. So that is the one thing that we really liked on this device.

Asus Zenfone 5z

Display Quality

Asus Zenfone 5Z having the 6.2 Inch Screen with the knotch design and it’s have IPS screen and the good thing is that the screen quality is actually really good on the Asus Zenfone 5Z. The white color gamut really makes a difference and this one has that. And also the contrast level is good, thanks to the native contrast that is 1500:1. So the screen quality is actually really good. You do not need to worries about the screen quality.

FingerPrint Scanner & FaceUnlock Quality

Redmi Y2, Realme 1, Asus max pro, Honor 7c

The fingerprint scanner is at the back and it’s on a very convenient position, you can easily reach it and it is very responsive. You don’t have to worry about the fingerprint scanner and yes it also has to face unlocking option that we find on almost every Android phone and the unlock has uses the AI, so if your eyes are closed it won’t open and this has the snapdragon 845 chipset that implies a lot of AI features within the smartphone. Further it has the knotch design which you can hide, if you want. There are settings in the UI from where you can hide it and it also have a physical LED notification light.

Speaker Quality

We have a speaker in the bottom similar toward the iPhone 10 does and that really enhances the sound output, for example when you’re watching videos, youtube etc. and you get a lot more immersive experience because of that stereo speaker and they are actually decently loud. In fact, In terms of sound Asus is doing a very good job and yes it has the 3.5 mm headphone jack and we test it with a bunch of headphones and the audio output was actually really good. It has the DTS audio option and there it has a lot of settings which you can use to tweak the Sound. So the sound output via the headphone jack is also good on Asus Zenfone 5Z.

Mi 8 vs oneplus 6

Asus Zenfone 5Z Performance

It’s running on the Snapdragon 845 chipset and it’s a very fast chipset. In Asus Zenfone 5Z the fastest Qualcomm has given and it performs very well. So again when you’re using the phone there is no lag you would notice on this phone. And even the base variant that comes with 6 gigabytes of RAM, it’s very responsive and RAM management has been done very well on this smartphone. It runs all the custom UI and Google assistant is also there. So in terms of a UI, it is having the custom UI but again it’s not like earlier Zenfone UI which was very heavy. The only big app that they have given is this mobile security app that does a lot of other things. for example you can lock apps with this and all other things.

Gaming Performance

Asus Zenfone 5z

The gaming performance is really good in Asus Zenfone 5Z. We tried it with two games that is PUBG and it runs without any issues also we tried it with asphalt 8 and again no problem which is expected as this is the most powerful chipset that Qualcomm produces. And Further it has excellent Adreno 630 GPU. So gaming is not an issue in Asus Zenfone 5Z.

Asus Zenfone 5z

Battery Life

Asus Zenfone 5Z has 3300 milliamp power battery and the good thing is that the charger that is supplied in the box is actually a Qualcomm quick charger 3. So in terms of charging, the charging speed is really quick. We would say, it’s not as quick as  OnePlus 6 but again it is fairly quick. We put it with the default charger and in less than one hour it was 100% charged. So the charging speed is good and it also has some AI charging.

Now let’s talk about the battery life, I’ve been using it for the past 12 days, Initial to 3 days the battery life was average but it improved considerably after that and now on an average, I’m getting about one and a half days of battery life with this Asus Zenfone 5Z. But again it will depend up on your usage. But the average screen on time that we was getting with this one is about 5 hours and if you’re sort of heavy user it can extend to up to 6 hours.

And if we compare it with OnePlus 6, we would say this one gives slightly better battery life. In terms of screen on time, this was giving approximately about 30 minutes extra screen on time compared to the Oneplus 6. So if you are sort of a heavy user, it would last for a typical working day. And if you’re sort of a casual user, it will last you for about one and a half days.

And it also has one more feature it does have FM radio support which is actually missing on most of the smart phone that comes with flagship processors like the 845. For example even the OnePlus 6 does not support FM radio. But that functionality is given on Asus Zenfone 5Z.

Camera Quality

Asus Zenfone 5z

Asus Zenfone 5Z has the dual camera setup. One is a regular lens and second is a wide-angle lens. First let’s discuss about the regular lens and the performance is actually really good and the surprising thing is that in artificial lighting condition it actually does a lot better than in outdoor lighting condition. But some problem with exposure and this can be actually fixed with a software. We hope this issues fixes that because when you have a bad bright background at the back the face was simply not looked at, but again in indoor lighting conditions in even low lighting it actually surprisingly performs very well.

Asus Zenfone 5z

Now moving to the video, we got one ODI updated in the last 10 days and prior to that the 4k video footage was very shaky but now after that update even the 4k is employing electronic image stabilization. So in terms of video stabilization no issues. So the video stabilization has been tremendously improved and also in static photography the main camera is actually having 4 axis optical image stabilization.

Now if we move to the wide-angle camera, we like the fact that it has a wide-angle camera not a telephoto lens, but in the wide-angle camera the image is slightly on the darker side.

Asus Zenfone 5z Con's

As we mentioned wide-angle camera is just 8 megapixel shooter but actually if you want to go in 8 megapixel its issues at 4:3 ratio, it is actually not that great. So you have to go in tune 16:9 or 18:9 ratio. And in 16:9, the resolution actually drops down to 6 megapixel. And if you go to 18:9, it drops down to 5 megapixel. So the wide-angle camera lens simply does not have that much resolution. Hence if you zoom into the pictures, there’ll be a little bit softer. Thus on our opinion, they should have gone with higher megapixel wide-angle camera.

Now moving to another cons: Asus Zenfone 5Z does not have any IP rating, so no water resistance or waterproofing features are there on this phone. So you have to be careful in this rainy season maybe you should use it with a case.

Conclusion

Considering the overall performance that is excellent, thanks to the snapdragon 845 chipset. And the other standard feature for the smartphone was the dual stereo speakers setup. So if you have a budget of around 30,000. We feel Asus Zenfone 5Z is an excellent Android smartphone.
